“That’s a setting. It’s protecting the battery.”

The Short Answer

The science is real: lithium-ion batteries age faster when held at a full charge, so capping at 80% genuinely slows long-term degradation. But the cost is real too — you give up a fifth of your daily capacity, every day, starting now, for a benefit you’ll only notice in two or three years. It’s worth using if you keep phones a long time and comfortably finish the day with charge to spare. It’s not worth it if you already run low by evening, or if you replace your phone every couple of years anyway. For most people, the automatic Optimized Battery Charging setting is the better trade.

Why Full Charge Is Hard on a Battery

Lithium-ion cells experience the most chemical stress at the extremes — very full and very empty. Sitting at 100% keeps the cell at high voltage, which accelerates the reactions that permanently reduce capacity. Heat makes it considerably worse, which is why a hot phone charging to full is the genuinely bad combination.

This is why the commonly cited advice is to keep a battery roughly between 20% and 80% where practical. It’s a real effect, not a myth.

What it isn’t is dramatic on any single day. One night at 100% does essentially nothing measurable. The damage is cumulative across hundreds of cycles, which is exactly why it’s easy to dismiss and also why it eventually matters.

The Two Settings Are Not the Same Thing

Worth separating, because people conflate them and they represent very different trade-offs.

Optimized Battery Charging is automatic and adaptive. Your phone learns your routine, charges to 80% quickly, holds there overnight, and completes to 100% shortly before you normally wake. You get a full battery when you need it while spending far less time sitting at full. Apple describes this behaviour in its documentation on charge limits and optimised charging. Android manufacturers implement equivalents under names like Adaptive Charging or Battery Protection.

An 80% hard limit is a manual cap. The phone simply stops at 80% and stays there. You never get the other 20% unless you turn it off. Apple added this as an explicit option on newer iPhones, and several Android makers offer the same.

The distinction matters enormously: Optimized Charging costs you nothing in daily usable capacity. The hard limit costs you 20%, every single day. Anyone who enables the hard limit thinking it’s the “better version” of Optimized Charging has usually made their phone worse for no additional benefit they’ll feel.

What You Actually Gain

Honestly? A slower decline, not a different phone.

Battery health degrades gradually with cycles and time regardless of what you do. Limiting to 80% reduces one contributing stressor. It doesn’t stop calendar ageing, it doesn’t stop heat damage, and it doesn’t prevent degradation — it slows one component of it.

The realistic outcome is arriving at year three with somewhat better battery health than you otherwise would have. That’s genuinely worth something if you keep phones for four or five years. It’s worth very little if you’ll have traded the phone in before the difference becomes visible.

Be sceptical of confident specific numbers here. Real-world degradation depends heavily on heat, charging habits, and usage patterns, and the honest answer is “meaningfully slower, amount varies.”

Use the 80% Limit If…

You keep phones a long time. Four or five years, or you hand them down. This is the strongest case — you’ll actually be there to collect the benefit.

You end most days with plenty left. If you routinely go to bed at 60%, capping at 80% costs you nothing you were using. This is the group for whom it’s genuinely free.

Your phone lives on a charger. Mounted in a car, sitting on a desk dock, permanently plugged in at work. Constant 100% is the worst case for battery ageing, and a cap helps most here.

Your phone runs hot while charging. Heat plus full charge is the genuinely damaging combination. If your phone gets warm on the charger, reducing time at full is worthwhile.

Don’t Bother If…

You’re regularly low by evening. If you finish days at 15%, cutting to 80% means finishing at empty, and you’ll charge mid-day — adding cycles, which is its own form of wear. You’d be trading one stressor for another and being inconvenienced for the privilege.

You upgrade every two years. The benefit arrives after you’ve sold the phone.

You have battery anxiety. If a low number stresses you, this setting will make you miserable daily to solve a problem you won’t perceive. Not worth it.

Your battery is already degraded. If health is down at 80% already, capping charge at 80% of that leaves very little to work with. At that point you want a battery replacement or a new phone, not a setting.

The Middle Path Most People Should Take

Leave Optimized Battery Charging on — it’s on by default and it’s doing the useful work already, without costing you capacity. Then spend your attention on the things that damage batteries more than charge level does:

Keep it cool. Don’t charge under a pillow, on a radiator, or in direct sun. Take the case off if it gets hot on the charger. Heat is the bigger villain by a wide margin.

Avoid deep discharges. Running to 0% regularly is harder on a battery than topping up frequently. Charging little and often is fine.

Don’t fast-charge when you don’t need to. Fast charging generates heat. If it’s on the charger overnight anyway, a slower charger is gentler.

TL;DR

Capping at 80% genuinely slows battery ageing — lithium-ion cells degrade faster held at full charge — but it costs you a fifth of your daily capacity every day for a benefit you only see in years two to three. Don’t confuse it with Optimized Battery Charging, which is automatic, on by default, holds at 80% overnight and tops up before you wake, and costs you nothing. Use the hard 80% limit if you keep phones four-plus years, end days with charge to spare, or leave the phone permanently docked. Skip it if you run low by evening, upgrade every two years, or your battery is already worn. For most people the default Optimized Charging plus keeping the phone cool is the better trade.
